A little while ago I saw a film on Discovery Channel, in which Terry Jones (of Monty Python) showed several origins of "modern" stuff. Among these was a hamburger stall in Pompei, Italy. Apparently the Romans already had fast-food stalls. It was not mentioned, however, if a pickle was included in the meal.
