Along the border of Scotland and England, families or clans rode and trod the area stealing, killing, blackmailing and generally being on horses at all times. The area was divided into six marches. Leading families in the area where Maxwell, Armstrong and Hume. They all amounted to nothing in the end on a planet-wide scale, but were fickle when it counted... fighting for England when it looked like they would defeat Scotland and vise-versa. I guess they knew which side of the bread was buttered!

Indeed! It would be painting too simplistic a picture to say "Scots good, English bad". This is a good example.
