Good article, very interesting.
One factual error - Breytenbach was not locked up because he married someone classified as non-white. It was far more interesting - and farcical - than that.
He entered SA using a false passport and had some idea of joining a resistance cell, but was caught very quickly and spent 7 years in prison, mostly because he had written a rude poem about the prime minister's murderous hands, speculating whether he used the same fingers on his wife's privates. He ended up apologising publicly to the PM, but that didn't help him much.
Btw., he's always referred to his own wife as 'lady one' - the implication being that he has others, but she's number one. As far as nice South Africans go, I'm sure there are some, somewhere, but Breytenbach isn't one of them. A talented artist, certainly, a genius at self-promotion, definitely, but 'nice'? Nah.
