A few weeks ago a tv programme mentioned that there may be a second moon orbiting the earth is this nonsense or does someone know something?

Yeah. It was "QI" or 'quite interesting' I did note the name down, but can't remember for the life of me what it was...

...found it! "Cruithne" more of an asteroid that zooms out of reach of the Earth and crosses the path of at least 2 other planets before zooming back again. See the link below:

It is not an asteroid it is an orbitting mass satellite around the Earth and is much more interesing than the luna

I think there's some dispute about whether Cruithne is actually a moon or not because it has no gravitational connection to the Earth. Anyone know whether this is true?

As far as I know there is no dispute. Cruithne has an orbit around the sun that lasts almost exactly a year but this orbit is not on the planetary plane; far from it. So it hardly ever crosses the path of the Earth.
