One of the biggest obstacles dark sky observers face in SE Michigan is the prevailing view that the brighter the light the less crime.
Even large farms have 'security' lights in place making it hard to find a spot where you can see the milky way.
Suburban sprawl with strip malls lighting up their parking areas only make this problem worse. Yet they would consider light pollution the lesser of two evils in order to make their parking lots safe.
