I studied English at university in London, so I guess that equates to 'majoring' in it (not too sure about how the US system works).

Because I've studied this book to death, I hope you won't mind if I sit this one out, but I think it's a good choice!

One or two cautions, though; it is a very sophisticated text because of the many arcane medieval references and attitudes reflected by the text, and so might not be suitable for the casual reader. Also, Tolkien's translation, although the touchstone and generally authoritative version of this poem, is neither the most common or the best translation available. I doubt it would be the cheapest version either.

However, when I bought and read this book, it was from a distinctly academic viewpoint, so I probably got an expensive annotated version and then didn't read it for pleasure at all, so the cautions above might be specific to me.

I was thinking of Tolkiens translation (which is published with Pearl & Sir Orfeo) into modern english, which doesn't come in an accedemic edition as far as i know.

Tolkien also edited (along with EV Gordon, and later Norman Davis) the standard Middle English text, which does have extensive accedemic note and references. |

The middle english i have read, and really enjoyed, but it was VERY hard going for me. I assumed the modern translation would be pretty much in the style of his middle earth poetry - if not more accessable - is this not the case?

As far as I can remember, it is more accessible in translation.

And I guess if potential readers are fine with reading Tolkien's prose, then this wouldn't be a massive step at all.

We're not starting with that after all now - we're reading "The Time Machine" by H G Wells, perhaps a lighter read is a little more suitable for the first go!
