I used to see and catch these small reptiles in my younger years when I lived in Horndon (A4187694) although they moved so quickly, actually catching one was rare, when I was lucky enough to catch one, I'd hold it for a couple of mins, then set it free again. 
My family moved from Horndon when I was twelve years old. I was delighted to discover lizards on a piece of waste ground near our new house, that was short-lived, as houses were soon built on the land. I was around 14 years old then, (I'm now 45) and that was the last time I saw a wild lizard.
I visited Horndon when I wrote the Horndon Entry, and was saddened to discover the field near my old home, where myself, brothers and our friends would camp most of the summer, play, look for slow worms and lizards was fenced off, although it had not been built on (yet) it had obviously been bought. 
It's too late this year, but next summer I'm going to make it my mission to find and see wild lizards.
