Poet Laureate?

That Burns was Scotlands National Poet i wouldn't argue, but Poet Laureate? Surely he was a republican, with no time for kings, or their patronage, particularly not english kings and institions - such as the laureateship. I'm prepared to be wrong on this, i just can't imagine he was ever any country's laureate. Are you sure this is correct?
