Photo Competition Finalist: Fire and Ice

0 Conversations

The sun sinking below the horizon of an icy landscape.
Fire and Ice, by Nigel Winters, Finchampstead.

Nigel says:

The photo was taken this winter in Courmayeur, Italy and I submitted it because to me it is such a great sight with the snow, the sunset, the glacier formation of the valley etc. A photo that could have been taken years ago, today, or in years to come. There are many other reasons but for me it depicts something of what its like on Earth, the scale and beauty of it all.

One of the surprising things about the entries we received for this competition was the sheer number of astoundingly beautiful sunsets and mountain-scapes that were sent in. This one shot managed to combine both of these categories into a totally breathtaking single image that fused the fire of the sun with the ice of the mountain tops. We were particularly impressed by the reflected glow of the sunshine on the river disappearing off into the distance. The vague threat of something that's either terrifying or glorious just over that horizon didn't escape us either.
