AKA Richard D James, AFX, Polygon Window, Caustic Window and a host of others.
Quite simply the best and most important musician of the 1990s. Richard James' music has been constantly innovative, soulful and exciting.
From Polygon Window's Surfing On Sine Waves to the latest Richard D James album he has always astonished with the scope of his imagination and the beauty of his tunes. His sheer range of styles is unmatched by anyone - from the terrifyingly powerful Joyrex J9 on the Caustic Window compiltion album to the sparse noises on Selected Ambient Works Vol 2, there is something for everyone.
Always ahead of the game, James started with techno, then did ambient, then trip hop, then drill and bass and also invented a few styles of his own along the way. And - the sign of true musical genius - no matter how varied his output, you can always tell when it's him.
Recommended starting points would be the classic album Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and his latest single Windowlicker, but you need the whole lot really.
The only really important British musicians this century have been The Beatles, The Sex Pistols (if you must) and the Aphex Twin, and history will laugh at us for not recognising it sooner.
