rules

thomas rule started the place in 1798 I believe. i've never actually been in because it's very expensive. it's london's oldest restaurant. it used to be an oyster bar although not in my time.

location

it's on maiden lane nearly opposite h2g2 towers. covent garden, london wc2. maiden lane's just off bedford street where the club for acts and actors is. or was. i haven't been there in a while.

menu

being bound to these buildings it's a little hard but i found them online at http://www.rules.co.uk so i know that they serve things like terrine of foie gras and grouse with a sauternes jelly for £10.95.

They have game, furred or feathered; fish like salmon (smoked); aberdeen angus beef; and puddings like banana parfait with apricot sauce.

Basically for starters you're looking at spending a tenner, twenty quid for a main course, eight quid for a dessert. wines from about ten quid to sixty quid (blimey) and fine wines from sixty quid to about four hundred nicker.

conclusion:

eat elsewhere if you're poor.
