I notice someone has added a tag above here saying
"This forum is not a public announcements forum. It is reserved for editors to post important news about h2g2, such as new versions of the site, or changes to official areas of h2g2."
and yet here we are at over a hundred posts and the thread is still open.

One thing I wanted to bring up is the conversation search engine.
If you look for a phrase in conversations it still only searches for articles. I would hope the refresh might deal with that.

From what I remember she gave as good as she got
I'm curious about the idea that disliked newbies get stalked off the site. I've not seen that. What I've seen is robust newbies not taking the time to find out how the community functions and then getting aggressive when challenged on their behaviour. Those researchers sometimes do get a following that steps over the line of decency IMO - think Lord Wolfden - but I don't think that this can be characterised as the poor brave newbie being unfairly victimised.
But I don't see everything that happens here, and I know there have been people harassed in the quieter places of h2g2
>>If you look for a phrase in conversations it still only searches for articles<<
Use google
But yes, it would be better if the official search engine was updated.

"Use google"
Technically, Google is *supposed* to be excluded from crawling anything but Edited Guide entries. But you might be lucky, as it seems to be broken at the moment and merrily indexing Journals... http://tinyurl.com/2w6ta7q

I don't know how it started bob, but at some point I got accused of all sorts of things for debating in a thread without knowing what her issues with the community were. Really, she just came across as very reactive, seeing insult where there wasn't any and not really taking the time to find out who people were (I got accused of being Brisith
). Eventually she sorted it out though and seems a good part of the community. I'm sure there were things done and said that were unfair on her, but like I said, she gave as good as she got from what I saw. That's why I'm interested in how much harassing is actually going on, because most often it looks like there are two sides involved.
Peet, I don't know what's changed, but google is now a reliable way to search conversations. Sometimes they turn up remarkably quickly, but haven't yet for this page.
KB, you may be right

In an attempt to salvage this thread:
I believe the nofollow tags were removed a few months ago, allowing google spiders to crawl the site - including conversation threads and journals.

I think Rich, who understands the technology underneath the bonnet pretty well, did a post about Google and their ability to search us on his journal.
Not sure of the netiquette about posting a link to someone's journal, so I won't do it, but if folk want to go look it is there.

>>And if it was, why was the policy change not announced?<<
Things often change here without being announced.

Well, that was a long-standing and to some fairly important policy that would have warranted an "Announcement" thread, IMO.
