Vanderbilt's Folly

I have been doing some research on the South Penn Railroad (aka Vanderbilt's Folly) and am trying to determine the involvement of the Vanderbilt Family.

I know William Henry Vanderbilt seems to have started the project but it appears it was stopped during the time of William Kissam Vanderbilt, William Henry Vanderbilt's second son, since the father died before the project was started.

Does anyone have any more definitive data on this?

My great grandfather was a contractor who had a contract to build the original Laurel Hill Tunnel.

I correct myself by saying since the father died before the project was completed.
Thank you!
