A Conversation for DEVON'S NEW FLAG

Morning everyone - sorry for the delay in getting Barumite's revised flag onto the site. It's now there for you all to see. I see the background colour has changed from the original as well as the crest -I assume that is a deliberate change.

Hi,

Thank you for the interest shown in my design. I have changed the background green slightly and the blue slightly. A big thanks to Plymouth Exile for his help with the shield. Doesn't that just prove that Devonians, wherever they are, are always willing to help another Devonian?
The reason for my colour changes was because, as I thought about my native County, I remembered a passage at the beginning of R F Delderfield's (a fellow old boy of my school, West Buckland), book, Diana in which the hero is looking at a painting of moorland with his mother in London. As they do so she says, in reference to Devon, 'There, Jan, that's how it looks and that's how it smells.' I thought then that my original green and blue were too garish and so I made them more like the colours found at home.
Best wishes to you all,

Barumite in Bristol (for as short as time as possible - Devon calls me!)

Plymouth Exile,

Thanks for asking - I AM happy to take the Devon Flag debate to a broader audience - and I guess a newspaper vote would probably be the logical next stage.

smiley - winkeye

(I am NOT happy about Argyle's result on Saturday!!!!)

smiley - ill

I must say I do like Barumite's revised design. The colours are better - and the shield (rather than the coat of arms) makes it look less cluttered.

smiley - magic

okay - I am still playing with smileys!!!

Coref,

I will wait to see if Devonian or Ozzie Exile have anything to add, and perhaps we can then arrange something with a newspaper.

I noticed on the Cornish Nationalism Board, that Tim Saunders has just twigged the significance of your accronym "Coref". That took him some time, for someone who is supposed to be a fluent Cornish speaker. Have you noticed that if you raise any important points with the Nationalists, or ask relevant questions, they never answer them. I wonder why.

I not your comment that you are still waiting for a response from devonian and myself. I have already responded - #39

It seems 'Devonian' has gone quiet - I tried emailing him a couple of days ago - but no luck yet. Fingers crossed.

Given that Devonian started the discussion and did end up with the most 'popular' vote (albeit there were some voting irregularities - esp with #2) it doesn't seem right to drop his design(s).

If 'Devonian' doesn't respond - should we still include design #6 in a newspaper poll? - assuming we have one - I would have thought so. (#2 has the Devon 'coat of arms' - so there are problems with that one)

Ozzie Exile,

I was under the impression that the plan was to proceed with Flags 1 (Celtic Cross with Shield), 6 (Plain Cross), 12 (Green/White plus Curved Arc Design) and the modified Barumite design 11 (Green with Coloured Waves plus Shield in Circle). I was waiting to see if everyone agreed with that, but as you say, Devonian seems to have vanished for the time being. Do we therefore go ahead? I was wondering if someone in the Plymouth area (Kerswell or Coref) could approach the Western Morning News organisation to see if they would be interested in staging a poll (cut outs from the newspaper only, no photocopies). The above designs would have to be downloaded and sent to them. Coverage would have to be the whole of Devon. They will already be aware of the design phase, from your letter to them. Perhaps Kerswell and/or Coref could let us know if they would be willing to do this.

To clarify - I tried to email 'Devonian' at the contact email he left in his 'my space' details here.

This may not be his current email, and as he has corresponded with BBC Devon I will ask them if they have a different address.

or..hopefully he will log on soon and let us know.

By the way, for interest I have found out the details for the Devon County Council flag (see below). It seems they also use a version with the coat of arms and just the shield!

"The Devon County Council flag is a mid blue background with our crest on as it appears on our website. We also have one that has just the shield part of the crest shown. The crest has been granted exclusively to Devon County Council by the College of Arms and therefore can only be used by DCC.

Regards,
Lisa K. Wilson,
Information Services Officer, Communications and Information,
Devon County Council"

Obviously the fact that the County Council has a flag does not make our efforts redundant. The Cornish County Council has a flag, and it is different to the 'St Piran' flag used to represent Cornwall overall.

Ozzie Exile,

I assume from what you have discovered from Devon CC, that although the Crest is exclusive to them (as we thought), the Shield is not. I have certainly seen it on many items in tourist souvenir shops. I have an anodised alluminium framed wall map of Devon and Cornwall with the Shield and the Cornish equivalent on it.

How long should we wait for a reply from Devonian? As I stated in my last post, I thought the intention was to include his Flag #6 in the four to go forward anyway. His design #2 is definitely out because it contains the Devon CC Crest, and it cannot be modified to include the Shield, as that would make it the same as my Flag #3, which received very few votes, so has been dropped.

I think we go ahead - and include design #6.

DCC did not say that the use of the shield required their approval, just the coat of arms. To be 100% correct they did not specifically say they didn't either, but by inference and use elsewhere I think we are okay.

Kerswell

I am happy to approach the Western Morning News group.

I will let you know how I go.

I will work on it over the weekend - so any brilliant ideas please let me know.

Initial ideas are to:

- Give a bit of background
- Indicate the fact that we had a web-based poll (thank you BBC Devon)
- Outline the good/great response we got (thank you readers)
- Indicate the problems (use of Coat of Arms, possible 'multiple voting' etc..)
- Ask them if they would be interested in holding a poll.
. (I will specifically ask them if they are willing to receive and handle the mail responses.
- We want the competition restricted to Devon as best we can.

Because the flags use multiple colours, the papers may have trouble replicating them. If this is so, then if the BBC are willing perhaps we can have a reference to designs on this web site so that interested parties can see the full technicolour.

Any major angle missed??

Kerswell,

Thanks for volunteering. Your plan sounds great to me. I assume you intend to go with the four designs we discussed, i.e. 1, 6, revised 11, and 12.

let us know how it goes.

Off subject a bit. Thanks for your support (and that of Ozzie Exile and Coref) on the Cornish Nationalism forum. I sometimes think that I have enough data to write a book on the psychology of the Cornish Nationalist.

I have sent in details of what we would like to do (with the four designs) to Westcountry Publications (the contact point for the WMN group), and will ring them in a day or so to see if they are interested.

hi there,

Sorry i havnt been on for a while but ive been really busy this past couple of weeks since my courses have just started again after the summer.

Im happy to forget about design two (to be honest i didnt really like it much) rather than bother with trying to change it around.
Sorry i didnt get the email you sent me exile but i got fed up of junk mail cluttering my inbox so i only recieve emails from those in my address book.

I like the idea of some sort of newspaper poll, i imagine it'll be hard to organise though. If you think we can do it then lets go for it!

I'll be logging on more regularly now as my course starts to settle down, so keep me posted of any events.

right then, speak to ya's soon.

I've been watching this thread for a little while now - it's fairly similar to the debate about the Scillonian Cross early this year http://www.mrflag.com/display_article.asp?id=55

I've been promoting their flags for them on the main MrFlag website (and we've sold 12 in about as many days). Would you like me to do the same for yours?

No-one is going to become rich on it, but it might help to promote the thing. No obligations - just for fun. Let me know. smiley - smiley

I have visited your site, and have noticed that you have already placed the white cross on green background design on the site. It was decided that due to certain irregularities in the voting, that the top four designs would go forward to another vote in a local newspaper. That vote has not yet taken place, but when it has we may well be interested in getting the winning design manufactured. In the meantime, please note that the flag on your website is not (yet) the chosen design, and may, or may not, end up as such. What does everyone else think?

I think we should see how far we get with a newspaper poll before commiting to a specific flag design. However it is promising that the 'Mr Flag' avenue exists.

I have also seen the website, and in my opinion the current disclosure is okay.

Incidentally Matthew Friday has finished his book (look at the Celtic Devon discussion) and is now looking for a publisher. Any bright ideas?

Further to the email from Bob Burns, we've now taken the Devon flag off the site and dropped the story. We hope we didn't inconvenience anyone.

We look forward to hearing more when the design issue is resolved, and we'll review the situation then!

Hi Everyone,

I think we have some decisions to make. As you have probably gathered by now, I E-Mailed the guy at MrFlag as well as posting here, just in case he didn't see my post. In his reply, he said that he would wait to here from us, to see if the winning design was one that they would be prepared to promote. I then asked him what he meant by that, and his reply was that complicated flags tended not to sell, because they were too expensive. I then sent him a JPEG of our four finalists for his comments, and he placed the two with the shield in the complicated bracket, Kerswell's design as medium, and Devonian's cross as simple. I then looked at their web site again and found the Kent Flag, which looks quite complicated (the centre bit of the design). I asked him about this and he said that it was an old design, which was a good seller. He then admitted that he might be wrong and that any of our designs could catch on and sell well, and he would leave it up to us to decide. Alderney and Yorkshire Rose are also complicated designs, which apparently sell well (as they are available in a number of sizes). I am sure that the Devon people are as patriotic as either the inhabitants of Alderney or Yorkshire. The possibilities are as follows: (1) if Devonian's plain cross gets most votes, no problem, (2) if Kerswell's design gets most votes, then MrFlag may only be prepared to produce it in one size, (3) if Barumite's or my design gets most votes, MrFlag may need some persuasion to produce at all. Perhaps we should get some quotes from him on the likely prices for each of the four. What are your thoughts on this?
