In UK news today it has been revealed that Kate (duchess of cornwall) has joined the Scout Association.

How do you feel about this.

well the thing is girls can join the scouts now
the same can not be said for the guides...
and to be honest would boys want to be guides?

As a former Guide leader, my first thought was 'What a coup for the Scouts!' closely followed by 'the ladies at CHQ are going to be *so* p'd off'.

Because I imagine the scouts perceive a likely increase in volunteers on the back of this. Giving a little time to help out your local youth group is so important, even royalty do it - why don't you join in? - sort of thing. It's significant that she is going to be volunteering - girlguiding's succession of royal patrons (currently the Countess of Wessex) have never been quite so hands-on. And Kate is *trendy* in a way the Countess simply isn't. There will be champagne at Pax Lodge tonight.

Hopefully - if it's not too late - it will also provide a wake-up call to girlguiding. But that's the jaded ex-leader in me.
