I've read this now over four times, I only have one niggle and it might just be me, but...I don't like sentences beginning with 'And', there are two of them.

And everywhere else, probably

And they make the reader work,

As I say it might just be me...

I like sentences that start with 'and', myself. I think that's an old English teacher tale.

I'd say, leave the first sentence alone.

Change the second sentence to 'They make the reader work.' You're right, that's stronger.
