I've been told to make sure that the wireless router I get is for a cable modem - does that apply to the one you recommended?

Hi, annie. If the "cable modem" has a network connection to the computer (RJ-45 in tech-speak) rather than a USB one, then yes.

(All "cable modem" tells me is what connection it has at the "wall side", not the computer side.)
