A Christmas Greeting from 1886

Children in the snow in 1886.

The custom of sending Christmas cards dates from 1843. It was all the rage in the 19th Century. Nowadays, you probably get most of your holiday greetings in e-format. Times change, but the cheerfulness of the sentiment does not.

This greeting comes from a little gift book called Christmas Roses, published in 1886. It's full of lovely pictures like the one above, with rosy-cheeked children doing cute things. Each picture is accompanied by a little story or poem. This one is called 'Hie for Christmas'.

Hie for Christmas.

As the kids say, off with Melancholy! 'Tis the season for greetings from the time machine.
