George Washington Sat Here
This photo first appeared in 1894 as part of Frances Benjamin Johnston's lecture series on historic houses and gardens. Here's what the Library of Congress says you're looking at:
"Mount Vernon," George Washington house, George Washington Parkway, Mt. Vernon, Virginia. Privy in vegetable garden.
It's a pretty nice place to put a privy, we suppose. You'd have a pleasant walk, and it's out of the way. The Father of Our Country had a really nice garden – and a pretty fancy outhouse. Since he was a classy gentleman, he might not have called it 'The Necessary', as many members of the Continental Congress did.
