Oddity of the Week - Writing to the Front

0 Conversations

November is NaJoPoMo Month. Back before the internet, people didn't write blogs. They wrote letters.

Writing to a Soldier

A college student writing to her boyfriend in the army, 1943.

The year was 1943. The place: Daytona Beach, Florida. This Bethune-Cookman College student wasn't spending all her free time out in the sun. Instead, she was back in the girls' dormitory writing a letter to her boyfriend, who was serving in the U.S. Army.

Brave guy, faithful girl. It's an old story.

We're sure her fellow enjoyed getting that letter, wherever he was. We hope he got home all right. And we really hope that they had a long and happy life together. Maybe their great-grandchildren are even now enjoying that picture, and saying, 'Hey, that's great-grandma. Wasn't she beautiful?'

Older folk may remember writing those letters. Or receiving them. Unfortunately, so may younger people – even if what they got at the front were mostly emails.

Here's to the day when nobody has to write to the front.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
