Cuneiform
Cuneiform is the oldest type of symbolic writing. It consists of wedge shaped elements. Not as in Hieroglyphs or the smiley talk on the internet, as the symbols are merely iconics for the sound, shape or meaning.
Ancient use is found in Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian, Persian, Babylonian, Astecian, Chinese
and runic writing1. Many children start writing using cuniform.
