The town of Dunoon
Created | Updated Sep 6, 2008
Dunoon is a small seaside town situated beside the river Clyde in Western Scotland. Across the Clyde from Dunoon is the scary town of Greenock. It takes just over an hour to reach Glasgow from Dunoon, (20-25 minute ferry ride and 30-45 minute drive). You can also drive round the peninsula of Cowal to reach Glasgow but this takes roughly an extra 45 minutes. There are two ferries from Dunoon across the Clyde. The Caledonian MacBrayne (the Cal-Mac) goes from Dunoon Pier to Gourock. The Western Ferries go from Hunter's quay (just outside Dunoon) to McInroy's point. The Western Ferries are much cheaper and run at least two ferries at a time, but they have much less facilities and are not the most attractive boats in Scotland. The Cal-Macs run one boat normally and are much more expensive, but they do have a cafeteria that sells doughnuts, tea, coffee etc. (at quite a high price). There are many hotels in Dunoon which have seen much better days. They used to enjoy a lot of business but since the introduction of cheap package holidays people are not travelling to Dunoon as much as they used to. The hotels are filled with old people from England who have travelled on tour buses. Dunoon is a nice town on a sunny day (once in a blue moon). A good place to eat in Dunoon is Anselmo's chip shop, with good prices and fantastic fish and chips. There are also many good walks in and around the area. If you would like more information on Dunoon, I would be happy to help.
