Baling Twine

4 Conversations

Baling twine is just a unique type of string used mostly by farmers to hold bales of hay together. This twine plays an important role in compacting the hay into a bale. One bale of hay is about one-and-a-half feet by two feet by four feet, but it holds about a 50-foot by eight-foot strip of hay from the field. In a regular bale, it is held compact by only two pieces of twine. The twine is made out of many individual pieces of string that are almost plastic-like, but tends to feel more like it is made out of really fibrous hay.

Why Is Baling Twine so Important?

Baling twine to a farmer is like duct tape to a plumber. He just needs it. There are an incredible amount of things that can be done with it. For example:

  • Securing luggage
  • Dog leashes
  • Hanging meat from a tree
  • Holding a barn together
  • Securing items to a truck bed
  • Shoe laces
  • Even the individual threads of it can be used for dental floss

Aside from the traditional usage of baling twine, it has come to be a major staple across farms worldwide.
