Four Small Poems Entitled 'Love' (UG)

4 Conversations

Official UnderGuide EntryIn a dark and smoke-weary cafe, at an indecently late hour, in the unanticipated company of worn-out literary rebels, defeated bohemian anarchists, leftover flower children and other unseemly if not unlikely malcontents, a gauntlet is thrown down: compose four ten-syllable poems entitled 'Love', each touching on one of the four elements — earth, air, fire and water. The wanderer's response to the challenge is here...

(air)   - - -     - - -     - - -     - - -

I would

give up

my share

of air

for

you

(fire)   - - -     - - -     - - -     - - -

love is sometimes like

rust just slow cool fire

(water)   - - -     - - -     - - -     - - -

inside me

is your retreat

to the sea

(earth)   - - -     - - -     - - -     - - -

where rock begins

and footprints end

— I wait
