58 years ago today - by the cover of night and the early morning mists - the Allied forces, under the the command of General Dwight D Eisenhower, embarked on the offensive. It saw their soldiers re-establishing a bridgehead on mainland Europe and would eventually lead to a push towards Berlin and the end of World War II.

D-Day 6 June 1944.


Operation Overlord.

150,000 troop landings, five beaches;

Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword, from 5,000 ships and 10,000 aircraft.

Normandy is invaded. Germany is taken by surprise.

First the gliders, then the paratroops.

At dawn the sea landings began. Major gains.

It was 'the longest day'.
