In this day in 1851 the Yacht America won the 1st Royal Yacht Squadron Cup at Cowes it has never been won back by the British and was until quite recently only won by an American team defending the title. It will start to be contested again later this year.
The America's Cup started 1851
America from New York took on sixteen British yachts and won.
Twenty six defences and 132 years later,
Australia II's winged keel defeats Americans.
Controversy in the 90's lead to a standard class of boat.
Only America, Australia and New Zealand have won the cup.
