Why did this joke actually make some people laugh in 1843? Because it was making fun of the Millerites, who were busy predicting the end of the world in 1844. The guy in the fireproof safe is just taking precautions against early-morning apocalypses. Ha, ha.

What does this silly joke have in common with a 2009 movie starring Nicolas Cage? The film Knowing also deals with the issue of apocalypticism. Like the Millerite movement, the film received mixed reviews.

What have we learned? Nothing, really, except how fleeting a thing cultural baggage can be. And how comforting the words 'Don't Panic' really are.
