Irmo, the Greatest Swordsman on R Street

Samurai

Hello! Niten here, broadcasting from the unfashionable backwaters of the great flatlands of the central US. After many years of being a user and peruser of the Galactic Edition of the Guide, it's amazing to find myself with the lofty position of Field Researcher. I'm looking forward to submitting my first expense report.

Since the purpose of this entry is to be an introduction to me, it seems vital to provide some objective yardstick against which me-ness can be measured. To that end, I present my Geek Code.

-----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK-----
Version: 3.1
GAT d--(++) s: a>? C++++(---)$ UBHL++++$> P+ L+++$ E++ W++ N--@ !o K++ w--(+++)$ !O M+ V-- PS+ PE(++) Y+>++ PGP>+ t--@ 5+ X+ R tv b+++ DI++++ D G(-) e++* h---(++) r+++ y+++(*)
-----END GEEK CODE BLOCK-----

Here's an even more terse attempt to pigeon-hole me: INTP

I'm also a Virgo, if you're into that sort of thing, which I'm not.

I see there is an H2G2 Researcher Code now, so finally:

----BEGIN H2G2 CODE BLOCK----
Version: 1.1
RA Y++ N SB+ A@ P L- M V(-)>++ s-- E+ PR++ p- a+ B+++ TV+@ r+ D T? nh? C- m+(-) t(+)
----END H2G2 CODE BLOCK----

What I Do

When I'm not performing my duties as a researcher for the Guide, I make a living as a programmer and freelance swordsman.

Boring Details

I enjoy hacking on C, Python, C++, Java, TCL, and HTML. My 'regular' job is working for a company that produces CAD software for the structural steel industry. If you're in a steel framed building right now, there's a reasonable chance it was designed using software I've worked on.1

I've done some client/server, database, and graphics, but for me human factors and interface design is where it's at.

I also do some coding on the side. I recently completed a long project involving design and implementation of a control system for promotional signs at sporting venues. After recovering from that, I'd like to get involved in an open source project, but I haven't decided where or what yet.

What Else I Do

With my copious freetime I also like to

  • Read
  • Write, because I'm in love with the sound of my own voice
  • Work on our house2
  • Travel
  • Practice fencing3
  • Cook (and eat) vegetarian food
  • Study and practice Aikido

Don't Panic!
1Be afraid.2Not strictly true; actually, I hate working on the house. I like, however, the results.3Not doing this much anymore. Too many rules.
