Take my word for it...
I am a word freak - some of my friends say that I am just a freak, but that's another story 8-) - and one of my greatest joys :-) is finding new words, descriptive words, words that sum up so well what I am trying to say; one of my greatest frustrations :-( is catch-all words (there must be a word for it), words that people use repeatedly because they are too lazy to broaden their vocabulary and make their conversation/writing more interesting and colourful. "Thing" is one of those words in my home. A programme on TV will be referred to as a thing (Did you see that thing on TV last night?); a newspaper article becomes a thing (did you see that thing in the paper); objects with specific names and descriptions become things, like the latch on the door (have you locked the thing on the door?)
I have little formal education and so probably display the pedantic enthusiasm of the autodidact ;-) (self taught person) but I so delight in words and I am convinced that the world would be a happier, more colourful and interesting place if we all simply took the time to learn a few more.
