Hi Great Souls, I am Prof.T.Shivaji Rao, aged 70 years and presently working as Director, Centre for Environmental Studies, GITAM Engineering college, Visakhapatnam, India. I worked as Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Andhra University, College of Engineering. Besides being an academician and a Research worker in the fields of Ecology and Environmental Pollution Control I have also been a consultant to the state and Central Governments as an expert committee member for several industrial, Irrigation and Hydro-power projects and I also worked as an environmental activist by highlighting the crucial environmental issues at public meetings and in the mass media and by preparing scientific and technical reports for presentation before the state High Courts and the Supreme Court.
I have taken a Bachelors Degree from Sir,M.Visweswariah Engineering college in 1956 and worked for 2 years as field Engineer in the water supply and Buildings division of Nagarjuna Sagar dam. Being vexed with the several malpractices I joined the faculty of Civil Engineering at Andhra University in 1958 and later proceeded to Rice University, Houston, Texas on Research Assistantship for higher studies.
After returning from USA with MS degree in Environmental Sciences and Engineering I started Masters degree programme in public health Engineering at Andhra University in 1963 and taught the Post Graduate Students the subjects of Epidemiology, Parasitology, Environmental Sanitation, Sanitary Chemistry, Micro-biology, Radiological health, Industrial Hygiene, Hydrology and Hydraulics, Advanced water supply and sewage treatment, Industrial waste treatment, Stream sanitation, Air Pollution Control, Environmental Impact Analysis etc. Guided theses work for Masters and Doctoral Degrees. Published several papers on environmental problems. I was invited by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for participation in Nobel symposium in August 1976.I was a member of the A.P.State Pollution Control Board (1976-79), Chairman, Technical Committee of the Pollution Control Board (1976-82). Formerly Member of environmental Appraisal Committee, Ministry of Environmental and Forests, Government of India. Member of the Expert Committee on Artificial Rains, Government of Andhra Pradesh. I am a Fellow of the A.P.Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).I am a Recipient of Best Teacher State Award of Government of Andhra Pradesh for 1986-87.and also a Recipient of the University Grants Commissio’s National Award “Swami Pravananda” Award on “Ecology and Environmental Sciences” for the year 1991.
Besides 70 publications on Environmental Issues in National and International journals I have authored the following books:
1.save Taj Mahl and Peop[le of Braj Mandal2Sampling and Analysis of Water and Induatrial Effluents 3Nuclear Plants – The Silent Killers4Elements of Air Pollution and its Control5Tehri Dam is a Time Bomb6Artificial Rain-Making 7Man and his Environment (in Telugu)Among the most successful environmental crusades waged by me, the campaign launched in 1975 to SAVE TAJ MAHAL from the industrial pollution due to the wrong siting of a 6 million tones Mathura refinery in the upwind side of Taj Mahal, the dream of people all over the world, caught the attention of people in several enlightened countries.. In fact the team of scientists from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, had gone through my environmental impact reports on the Threat to Taj and also witnessed my personal presentation of the problem to Mrs.Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister, who visited the Indian Science Congress exhibition at Visakhapatnam on 2nd January 1976. Mrs.Indira Gandhi promised to take necessary action to save the Taj and the life and culture of Brajmandal. The Swedish Scientists congratulated me and subsequently invited me along with 20 other experts from all over the world to participate as a resource person in the NOBLE SYMPOSIUM AT STOCKHOLM during August-September 1976. During the symposium extensive calculations were made and for the first time a serious warning about Ozone depletion was given along with suggestions on how to abate the impending environmental threat to human life.
As a member of the investigation team on the DELHI GAS LEAK TRAGEDY in December 1985 we made the first Disaster scenario for a chlorine tank-burst including the air pollution modeling which indicated that such large scale chlorine storage tanks will wipeout lives of lakhs people in New Delhi in case of an accident, we presented alternate solutions to the industry and the state to safe-guard public health.
I have prepared perhaps for the first time in the country DAM BURST SCENARIO FOR THE TEHRI DAM and as a member of the expert committee that evaluated the environmental safety of the dam and disaster management, I have presented the report to the Union Minister for Environment and Forests and suggested alternate solutions for the problem.
I have prepared the CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT OF 2000MW proposed at Nagarjuna Sagar Dam in Andhra Pradesh and used the air pollution modeling to predict the concentrations of radio-activity and their times of arrival at different places down wind of the plant. This exercise led to an intensive study on disaster management systems and the real cost benefit analysis. An awareness of this problem ultimately resulted in large-scale public response against this plant and the Government was given alternate solutions to tide over the power crisis. In the occasion I wrote the Book-Nuclear Plants the Silent Killer.
Again I have prepared along with my colleagues a DISASTER SCENARIO FOR THE 10,000 TONNE AMMONIA STORGE TANK due to a maximum credible accident in the port area of Visakhapatnam city. This paper created awareness of the problem among the people and the Indian Navy the central and state Governments are planning to take necessary action to save the people and their properties.
Among the serious attempts made by me to protect public health, unique ecological systems, cultural heritage and the environment and to create awareness on crucial emerging environmental problems of contemporary society considerable success has been achieved as indicated below I have a wife and a son(47). My wife Mrs.T.Lavanya Lata(70) and my grand daughters Ms.Renu Sravanthi(19) and Smriti(15) are a great source of inspiration to me in taking up the cause of the environment and I am really thankful to them.
I appeal to the members of the 360 community to cooperate with the gigantic task taken up by the BBC to eliminate poverty disease and conflict and environmental pollution for ensuring a peaceful healthy and prosperous life for the present generation of people who will have to leave the earth in a better condition than what they have received from their fathers’s and fore-fathers as otherwise the future generations will not excuse them for their sins of omission and commission.
