Homage
I used to use the handle mingus on my employer's network in homage to the great Charles Mingus. Having served my tenure, I do my own thing with an Apple Powerbook (the very smart titanium model) with OS X and ntl: broadband - I enjoy all that techie stuff. I am now using a new handle in homage to the world's greatest baritone saxophone player Gerry Mulligan - I do baritone with MamboJambo "http://www.mambojambo.com" >http://www.mambojambo.com".
I am curious about the motives of people who join this forum. I guess there is not much harm in allowing the mind to wander but I suspect that there are people who blur the boundary between fantasy and reality. My favorite quote of recent time was by someone talking about extreme biologies (real science) on In Our TIme (Radio4), "Its not like Star Treck".
The other amazing thing is that people refer to the universe in the present tense - failing to remember that distance and time are related - Andromeda, which is relatively close - too close to be affected by Hubble's Law, is (was!) not only 2.2 million light years away but also 2.2 million years ago. I suppose it makes the text too clumsy to keep saying was and maybe the whole idea to too heavy for this forum.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
