Counting Magpies

A poem for Michael, who has Asperger's and likes to count and likes to spin and likes the sound of poetry and, in spite of all the politically-correct age-appropriate crap that's been thrown at him over the years, still chooses to live with Pooh on Ashdown Forest.

Forever woodlands' timeless child,

Of foxes' cubs and bracken wild,

Who's heard the magpies' lies and smiled,

But never turned away.

With tales of sorrow, tales of joy,

A promised girl, expected boy,

Dreams of silver and dreams of gold,

Lies of a secret yet to be told.

A hope, a wish, a dream, a kiss,

The magpies lies are made of this,

Like counted stones around a dish,

They spin the time away,

They spin the time away.
