Popular among children, these are bits of colored wax, molded into sticks for convenience of storage. When rubbed against paper, they have the effect of tinting it rather unevenly. Although carrots have a similar effect and are slightly less expensive, crayons come in a variety of colors, in much the same way that carrots do not.
