Christmas Mail by kipperonthefloor
Early one December dawn
The post arrives at the station
For shipping out all over the place
Right across the nation.
At platform one
A train is sitting,
Hissing like a dragon.
The mail is loaded by the sack;
Parcels, letters, gifts galore!
All is done, it's time to go,
Steaming off to the snow.
Groaning, creaking, hissing and rumbling
Through the country, coated in white,
Wagons putting up a fight.
Through country, city and town
Past trains of coal and trains of oil,
Passenger trains and trains of goods,
Driver and fireman work and toil.
To get up Berwick hill;
To give the children Christmas cards
And working man the bill.
Till down the line there is in wait
Some children at a crossing gate,
Their faces full of anticipation.
A whistle, shrill, breaks the peace
A monster of Red and black,
Races past at beak neck speed.
Further on a hook and net...
The hook holding up a sack,
The net to take one back.
On the train, the set up is similar;
The train is there, in a flash the change is done!
One sack taken, one sack left.
All the while the train moves on,
Never slowing...
The train races through a wintry scene,
Snow mingling with steam.
Roaring over river, road and field,
Sheep turn and flee.
Birds fly away in fright.
Signal drops, and points clack,
At last it comes to the end of the track.
The mail is unloaded and taken away.
Delivered to homes, businesses, parliament and church.
In a house the doorbell rings,
The postman with a package.
And all that fuss and hullabaloo;
For two socks...
One red and one blue!
