The chasm

I didn't know you were falling till you hit the ground
I didn't care to find out; to check on you
Had I visited, would I have seen
that you were slowly toppling down into the abyss?
A slow decline, a gentle slope
If I had thought at all, I would have assumed it was just a dip in the ground
The type you don't even notice, that you can climb out of barely using any breath
Now I know better, too late to save us both
You are crumpled at the bottom of the cliff
While I look down from a point of safety

There is no gentle slope for me
If I want to join you I will have to take the shortest route
