The h2g2 Literary Corner: The Road Not Taken

0 Conversations

In honour of July's Create challenge, we bring you Robert Frost's seminal poem 'The Road Not Taken', courtesy of Project Gutenberg. The poem was first published in 1916.

'Seminal' means it gives you ideas. We hope this poem will give you ideas about roads not taken.

It certainly gave your Editor ideas.

The Road Not Taken

The M6.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood1,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler2, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could3
To where it bent in the undergrowth4;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear5;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same6,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black7.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back8.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence9:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference10.

1The problem of acid rain really needs to be taken up by an international commission and the logging industry.2You could if you were Schrödinger's Cat.3We have one word for you: binoculars.4There is serious underemployment in the forestry industry. These paths could be better maintained.5That's it, go out and get yourself lost. Then we'll have to send a rescue team.6We suspect the Road Less Travelled is popular with mountain bikers.7Can't you wear trainers?8Busy publishing schedule, eh? We understand the deadline pressure.9Or in 1916, when you needed to fill up another page in that book.10We're sorry, but we predict that this story will get you dumped out of the Red Chair on Graham Norton.
