Video of the Week: I'll Fly Away

This week's video is 'I'll Fly Away', an old-time gospel number from 1929. It has been called the most-recorded gospel song by people who keep track of these things. You can't go wrong with a song that has featured at both jam sessions and funerals. Albert Brumley, who wrote it, also penned the amazing gospel number, 'Turn Your Radio On', an invitation to listen to gospel music on the air. He said he got the idea for 'I'll Fly Away' while picking cotton, which is pretty good multitasking. Picking cotton is also a good motivator for wanting to be somewhere else. Anywhere else.

The images are courtesy of the Library of Congress, and feature old rural churches in the US, along with some old-timey organs.

Just a few more weary days and then I'll fly away,

To that land where joys will never end…
