Election Day, 1820, Liverpool

Elections: love 'em or hate 'em, they're a necessary part of a democracy, and they've been going on for at least a couple of centuries. Surprisingly, not much has changed in all that time, except for the glossiness of the campaign posters. We found a book called The squib-book; an impartial account of the Liverpool election, March, 1820. See, 'fair and impartial' as an ironic designation isn't new at all. Anyway, here's a page from this excellent tome, and if you're from Liverpool, you might be interested in the complete account of the election, which includes campaign songs about Temperance and such, plus complete returns. You'll be amazed at how few voters were involved.
