Who Are Our Heroes?

Who Are Our Heroes?

A medal for heroism, with a question mark
This is a time when ghosts might walk.

Families weep for loved ones,

dying alone in care homes.

Citizens sentenced to house arrest

peer from windows at empty streets.

Shoppers walk masked in fear

of an invisible killer among them.

Who are our heroes in time of need?

Not politicians mouthing platitudes,

letting decisions fall through fingers.

Not captains of industry, pocketing

millions, while sacking their workers.

Not the royals, shamed by a taint

of racism and a prince too fond of girls.

Today our heroes are scientists

in lab coats testing chemicals;

doctors and nurses, shrouded

in masks and visors like spacemen,

bending over the sick and dying;

volunteers delivering parcels

to needy families, answering

phone calls from the desperate.

These are our heroes in the time of Covid.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
