Upper Tier of restaurants:
Yuan Fu Vegetarian—-this is a chinese all-veg restaurant that rocks. I recently took 9 non-vegetarians from work, and everyone commented on how great the food was. These aren't people that seek or even want to eat this type of food, but, eat it they did. The atmosphere is that it is a chinese food place whole in the wall. Lunch is particularly cheap at around 6.50 for 3 different choices from their pre-made selection. It is conveniently located right on rockville pike, this is my favorite vegetarian place in the area. My fiancee(non-vegetarian) loves this place despite not typically liking vegetarian places. Recommended dishes: Pumpkin Chicken, Cashew chicken, spring rolls, and vegetable soup. They also have a killer mushroom special dish.
Miss Saigon is a Vietnamese restaurant that is not pure vegetarian, but it does have an excellent selection of vegetarian food. The vegetable combo option has tofu and mock duck meat with a tasty brown sauce and veggies that are cooked to just the right level. The atmostphere is nice, and service is speedy.
2nd tier of restaurants:
Joe’s Noodle House(not pure vegetarian but with a lot of vegetarian options)—tomato noodle tofu soup and mushroom tofu dish…, Chinese.
Antonio’s Café(Jamaican vegetarian food, not pure vegetarian)—vegetarian chicken sandwich.
Bottum rung:
Vegetable Garden, also chinese has some great food, but overall the atmosphere is drab, service is often slow, and the food is more miss than hit. Many people after coming, complain of stomach problems and do not ever come back. I like this restaurant, but it pales in comparison to Yuan Fu. Recommended dishes: white jade rolls, Chinese., vegetarian
Sienna’s—vegetable meatball sandwich, Italian vegetarian. This is a decent enough place, but using kosher cheese really kills anything with cheese. At times the ingredients seem stale and the food can be too greasy. But, it at other times can be good.
Other great places in the dc area:
DC
Vegitate is a cool restaurant, that has the best atmosphere of any of these places. Don't hesistate to go here, particularly during restaurant week. Some of the other dishes are hit and miss, when we last went the gnocchi was impeccable and the dessert cupcake was excellent.
DC
Amma's Indian Vegetarian Cooking
Very good southern indian place with excellent dosa's and everything else.
Vienna/Falls Church, VA
Sunflower
Has a cool almost culty atmosphere, sunflowers. They have a wide selection of food, that is at times great and others very hit or miss, or sometimes into the realm of "too veggie too healthy" and sacrifices flavor.
Falls Church, VA
The 4 sisters
This is a Vietnamese restaurant I wish I went more to, it is excellent and they definitely know there way around tofu.
Silver Spring, MD
Mandalay, burmese, has the greatest samosa's you'll find anywhere in the area. Not a pure veg place, but has a savory tofu tomato dish that served with mild spice has a nice tomatoey/cilantoey flavor. Service is speedy, and they are quick to bring out food.
Recommended groups to join if you frequent these restaurants:
Join the washington dc society of vegetarians and you can get nifty discounts at a lot of these restaurants..
That is what I recommend, you'll notice I don't recommmend a ton of Southern Indian places. They exist and are decent I am not a huge fan of theirs because I find the food to be too spicy and it feels more like fast food than healthy food.
