Welcome to My World!

Hi, I’m Auralyra. I’m female, 19, Australian, blonde, wear glasses, am a prolific reader and cultivate my own indoor jungle in my bedroom. I've just finished high school and a first year uni course in Philosophy, and am smack bang in the middle of my full time University course, completing year one of a Bachelor of Film and Television at the Victorian College of the Arts this year. I used to think I wanted to eventually make a career in film direction, but now I'm not so sure. After spending a year actually directing and living vicariously through my best friend's career doubts, I seem to be stuck drifting.

Auralyra

- Unusual, excentric, species, distantly related to the tortoise, with an affinity for the written word, Celtic music, English tea and indoor plants. Originally native to New South Wales, Australia, in 1985, it was observed to migrate South to the tiny seaside town of Dromana, Victoria where it now resides. Although in general a solitary creature, and casual sightings have declined in recent years, it is fiercely family orientated, and seems most comfortable either in isolation or in a family setting. Its vision is exceedingly weak, leading some researchers to compare it to the more common breeds of bat.

The Auralyra is herbivorous and, although it feeds on the usual, more conventional herbivorous foods, has the habit of consuming large numbers of books on a daily basis, almost exclusively of the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre, although it has been observed to read anything placed in front of its nose. Specialists studying this phenomenon have come to the conclusion that the species suffers from a particular condition- Compulsive-Page- Turning (C.P.T.), which prohibits the creature from finishing one book without having another on hand to start. Realistically, many are still baffled and, it seems, further study is required in this area if we are to determine the nature of the condition.

The Auralyra is territorial, marking its territory by enforcing a state of orderly disorder on anything within its perceived domain. Its bower is characterised by a bizarre combination of old-world and modern ‘clutter’, bottles and jars of home remedies, a beloved collection of unruly indoor plants, peacock feathers, papers (novels, short-stories, essays in various stages of completion), a large A fairy falling into a pot of ink; another fairy writing on a piece of parchment paper wooden staff, knick-knacks and a large collection of books stored on every available shelf and flat surface.

In the winter, it often roosts indoors, drinking cups of tea and hot chocolate, and has been known to fight viciously for possession of a position in front of the heater on particularly cold days…

"There never was a merry world since the fairies left off dancing and the Parson left off conjuring."

- John Selden

Books

"Books are the windows through which the soul looks out. A home without books is like a room without windows."

- Henry Ward Beecher

The last book I read and loved was: Fool's Fate by Robin Hobb.

My favourite authors are JRR Tolkien, Robin Hobb, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan, Sara Douglass, Fiona McIntosh, Catherine Jinks and Cecilia Dart-Thornton. You can see a list of my favourite books and authors I've missed here. I don’t watch much television, but I do keep an eye on Alias and Red Dwarf and am a huge Monty Python fan. I live at home with my parents (both primary school teachers), my sister (who’s sixteen and a huge Blink182 fan) and my brother, who’s thirteen and idolises me. I read to him in bed of a night. We read all the Harry Potter books, then the Hobbit, then spent a year reading the Lord of the Rings, finishing a week before the first film was released in Australia. I love both films and, if its possible, like the Two Towers better than the Fellowship, despite its departure from the book's storyline.
