Picture Bug Quiz: The Firebug - Answer

Q. In the 1960s, Harvard University researchers weren't able to raise firebugs in captivity. They developed into something out of a scifi/horror movie and died. What turned out to be the problem?

A. US paper towels! Also US newspapers. The paper the researchers raised the bugs on was the culprit. US paper contained hormones from the balsam fir tree which seriously interfered with the firebugs' development. Now, tell us that wasn't a worthwhile way to spend your grant money.
