Abi's Community Column

Welcome to this week's pick of the best things occurring on h2g2. I will
be taking you through Ask h2g2, via some of the
best new Edited Entries and past one or two great
Community activities. This is your guide to the Deputy Community Editor's
favourite bits of h2g2.

A lot of people have been worrying about the puppy I have been mentioning
in my name. I just wish to assure you all, it never actually existed. So you
can stop worrying.smiley - winkeye

Ask h2g2

Here are some of the topics that have been keeping the Community talking
this week:

  • I spent all of last year on tenterhooks, waiting for Lord of the
Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
    . I wasn't disappointed, but that is
not the view of everyone who has seen the film. Ask h2g2 has been arguing
about this since the day after the film was released. The debate is still
raging, so if you haven't added your views, why not pop over and say if you
thought it was a triumph or
    disaster
    ?

  • Anna, my fellow editor, popped over to ask the Community who or what would you put into Room 101?
Personally, I would put Jim Rosenthal who fronts ITV's F1 coverage,
Yorkshire Terriers and Connex South Eastern.

  • Spook is trying to gauge the Community's views on Sex before Marriage. He hopes to turn this into a collaborative
entry, reflecting a diverse range of views. Are we free-loving children of
    the 1960s or new puritans?

  • A couple of days ago, I saw a very strange sight: a city gent who was
very smartly dressed and wearing some of the brightest socks I have ever
seen. This made me wonder why do some men
    wear red socks
    ?

  • What did you dream last night? Do your dreams have sound or are they
silent? Do you dream in colour or black
    & white
    ? Jimi X wants to
    know.

Edited Entries

Here are some of the new Edited Entries that caught my eye over the last
week.

  • As a keen1
horsewoman, I admire those who play polo. My admiration grows further for
those who play Elephant Polo. It might be a slower game, but think of the
    length of those mallets!

  • They divide public opinion, but the Concrete
    Cows of Milton Keynes
are a civic institution. Why not acquaint
    yourself with these infamous bovines.

  • We are in the midst of a mass extinction and for many species the
future is bleak. Conservation genetics might be
the future for many species, so why not find out how science is trying to
    help?

  • Who ate all the pies? The people who wrote this great entry on this
most delicious of dishes. Get your pastry out
    and get cooking.

All that and I haven't even mentioned my own effort: the Soho Bazaar...

Community Choice

Bagpuss popped over to see me late last week to tell me about a new
Community activity, number bagging. Established Researchers are creating new
accounts in order to bag cool numbers. Congratulations to Cool Number who holds the coveted number U190000. Just
one question: who are you?

If you have any suggestions for items to be included in this column or to
be featured in Abi's Activities, do let me know.
