Oddity of the Week: How to Avoid 'Bicycle Hair'

An advert for Velocipede Hair Oil, 1869.

Ladies, are you tired of 'bicycle hair'? Does the wind blow your 'do to pieces? The Library of Congress always comes up trumps. It's got this 1869 advert for 'Velocipede Hair Oil'. It's even scented. Cool, huh?

Ah, you protest. But I wear a helmet. Of course you do, unlike those careless people in the last millennium. Oh, well – I'll bet Velocipede will stand up to crushing, too. But it might make the inside of your protective gear smell, er, fragrant.

You can't have everything, we guess.
