It's a Sign: h2g2 Historical Moment

Many mediæval towns in England have a market cross. These, located in the town’s marketplace, are often covered to provide shelter and are where people would gather to buy local products which are reflected in their names. So they typically have what otherwise may be considered unusual names such as the Buttercross or Poultry Cross.

This one I spotted on a trip to Salisbury has a particularly bizarre name; the label provided informed me that it is called the 'Cross with Extreme Caution'…
