At the end of the Clone Wars, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was supossed to give up his extra powers and disband the army and navy, but instead he proclaimed himself Emperor, proclaimed the Wookies and countless others to be slaves, and established humanity as the allegedly superior species.
The Empire, or Imperial Remnant to some, is still a powerful industrial power, and was key, under Grand Admiral Gilad Paeleion to the victory of the Galactic Alliance in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong. The Empire has taken the opportunity to expand its borders slightly, and has liberalized many aspects of society, although the Moff system is still prevelent in the original Remnant territory, newer colonial aquistions are allowed to keep their freedoms as long they provide taxes and men to the Empire.
