Is adult entertainment killing our children?
Or is killing our children entertaining adults?

One In A Million

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

You're one in a million
Yeah that's what you are
You're one in a million, babe
You're a shooting star
Maybe someday we'll see you
Before you make us cry
You know we tried to reach you
But you were much too high
Much too high, ow, much too high
Much too high, much too high
Yeah, yeee, yeah, yeee, igh!
Ow! Much too high
(Oh, much too high, ah,
much too high, ah, much too high
much too high, ow, much too high)

I am a member of the h2g2 Musicians Guild, which is a virtual club for musicians, singers, composers, and other music aficionados at h2g2. Up the Irons!

Assorted stuff: Me and everything else

I was born into a scene of agriness and greed, of dominance and persecution
My mother was a queen, my dad I've never seen, I was never meant to be
Now I spend my time looking all around, for a man that's nowhere to be found
Til I find him, I'm never gonna stop searching, I'm gonna find my man, gonna travel around...
Cause I'm a Wrathchild!
Yeah I'm a Wrathchild!
I'm a Wrathchild, coming to getcha...

Then they watch the progress he makes
The good and the evil which path will he take?
Both of them trying to manipulate
The use of his powers before it's too late...

Some have called me Satan's son - a name I cannot deny
Making the best of the cards I've been dealt, adjusting the odds so I win
Born of Fire...

Barring quotes from songs, I like to think of myself as an individual. Not a sheep, trend-whore, conformist. An individual. Doing stuff that nobody else has heard of, cos that's what I like doing. You get people who think that liking Nirvana makes them different cos Nirvana are 'heavy' and heavy music ain't cool. I think they don't have a clue as to what it's all about...
So while all the kids were getting into the chart music and being part-time fans of whoever was #1, you pilfered your dad's CD collection and listened to Eric Clapton, right? From exploring the guitar gods or yore, you worked your own way up, explored more types of music and took whatever attracted your fancy, steadily building up your own identity. And not just through music.

While I had read Watership Down and was ploughing through every James Herbert book I could find, I'd say most of the kids I knew could hardly read a book. At least, they weren't willing to admit they could read. And while I went off to the cinema with them, just like you would, to see the newest kewl film, I was still prepared to admit to what I enjoyed watching in privacy: furry animation.

So, there you have it. From Eric Clapton to Iron Maiden. Watership Down to James Herbert. The Secret Of NIMH to ever other damn film in the video shop. Times change though. I got less time for the AOR giants, which I suppose is a shame because they are actually quite good. But there are plenty more guitar gods out there. Playing in comparitive anomnity because the mainstream decides they don't want to know. Which is where I step in.

I've been doing my own damn thing for a while now. Longer than most of the other conformists. I'm kinda used to seeing the punks and skids try to kill off whatever comes their way that ain't accepted as the norm. They try to fight it. I fight them. For the love of Heavy Metal.
Watership Down is fine, but it's screaming guitar that turns me on. From the drum&bass of AC/DC to the sheer power of Slayer, right to the undisputed kings of HM: Iron Maiden. It's music, it's damn class music. Those who dismiss it as high-pitched screaming with too many distorted one-chord guitars are obviously shallow minded. It's ironic that death and black metal, while being distinctly underground genres, are the chosen stereotypes for trendies.

Metal is music that encompasses sheer genius. Unfortuately, a lot of people just don't want to know. Particularly in my home country, England, and the rest of the UK. Whether it's people not caring for the brains that goes into songwriting and playing, or actively going out of their way to destroy the genre, people are very unreceptive to metal. It's sad that out of all of today's music, metal is the one to be victimised by the ignorance of the masses.
It ain't easy being a fan. Whether it's being ridiculed for the t-shirt, the immense difficulty of finding a gig, promotors and record companies being ignorant of the scene, or the general attitude against the music and it's fans. You do go through that s**t for fun. You put up with it cos you love the music. You love hearing it, and what it stands for. It inspires you, it makes you happy, it passes time pleasurably, you can even learn from it. It all depend what you get out of it. Ultimately, it's just the pleasure of hearing the music and being yourself.

A lot of people want you to be like them, to look like them, to think like them. It takes guts to repel the masses. I wish more people had more willpower and imagination, but it ain't happening.

DEATH TO FALSE METAL! KEEP THE FLAME ALIVE! UP THE IRONS! ROCK N ROLL IT WILL SURVIVE!

The accursed ones, I'll find them all...

I also support the Christian Holocaust website and sentiment. H2G2's biased policy means that so much as posting a mere link is a Crime, though.

JOURNAL
One Rode To Asa Bay
Aug 20, 2000

Yesterday I found a brilliant shop which sold old LPs. Amongst the masses of old Iron Maiden singles (which I shall buy as soon as I've bought my ticket for the Birmingham gig) there were BATHORY albums! And, like, the only other places I know to get these are in Australia, or by snail mailing the record company in Germany!
So, enthusiastically, I bought Hammerheart, the first of the Viking-themed albums. Today I listened to it.

I was slightly disappointed. I didn't expect great things of it, but of seven songs, two turned me off and four are good, but suffer from the poor production that Heavenshore Studio (read: Quorthon's garage) offers. However, song #7 justified my £8 spending and vindicated the whole album.
That song is One Rode To Asa Bay.
A poignant tale of Christianity's arrival in Viking land, and the beginning of it's destruction of Viking culture. The song would bring tears to my eyes if I wasn't so hard, like. Starting off with what sounds like a digeridoo (Vikings with dijeridoos?), the song slowly seams into the heavily distorted guitar and Quorthon's lovingly Swedish vocals. After two verses (I think I remember), the guitar steps on up and decides to tear you in half with it's engery. Quorthon Satanically screams and wails about strange men in armour smelling not of beer but flowers and with no hair on face.

Those who did not pay the one coin of four to man of new God
Whipped was times twenty and put in chains then locked by their neck to the log
To the log
And so all of Asa Bay did build a house of the cross
Every hour of daylight they did sweat limbs ached because faith must cost

Seeing as the song is 10 and a half minutes long, there's plenty of poignant singing about the beginning of the end of Asa Bay. Right up until the end, where old Crow announces
"People of Asa land, it's only just begun..."

A classic.

This particular Monday is two days away, but it's an important Monday. It's the Monday where Iron Maiden's new album, Brave New World, is released. It is also the Monday where the first of two new Dangermouse videos gets released. Hurrah!
I'm in Bristol on the Tuesday, so I'll buy 'em both up there bigeyes

I rarely write anything in my journal any more sadface

I went through my forums, all those hundreds of them. It made me very sad to see all the early ones that had died sadface . I noticed my style, back then, was much more innocent. I never swore.
I think I was a better researcher back then, to be honest. I went round and posted where and when I wanted. I don't any more.
I prefer my older articles. In my personal quest to know loads about HM bands and things I like, things have got a lot less personal with these things, if you understand me. Now it's just a case of "me read book, me relay facts".

So, I sing myself an Iron Maiden song:

"So, understand,
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years,
Face up, make your stand,
And realise you're living in the golden years."
