Title: To tip or not to tip? |
Author(s): |
Ref: One website in particular, the bbc h2g2 guide on tipping, states that not tipping waiting staff is simply rude, although from talking to staff at Cafe Uno in Bath, it seems that more often than not restaurant staff get the best deal compared to a lot of other service workers, such as chambermaids, kitchen porters and junior chefs. This website argues that not getting your steak cooked properly, the hotel bathroom not cleaned properly, the kitchen running out of your favourite dish, or being seated next to a table of smokers or noisy children, should not be reasons not to tip. It even goes so far as to say that if the waitress happens to spill some soup on your lap or forget something you ordered, then you should still tip her, and never less than ten per cent. |

Title: Hands up if you want to play THE TOP WEBSITES FOR... GARDEN GAMES |
Author(s): Damien Noonan |
Ref: French cricket: bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A804133. The simplest of beach games, requiring just a cricket bat, a tennis ball, a fair-sized playing space and a host of players of all ages and levels of ability. On the web, however, it is far from simple. An entry on H2G2, the BBC's user-edited encyclopedia, describes the game at length but misses out key elements - such as the batsman being allowed to move his feet only when he hits the ball, and the fact that the aim is not to score runs, but to stay in. Hmm. Controversy is brewing. |

Article: To live in interesting times - VAT and Interest |
Author(s): Mitchell Moss (Dorsey & Whitney) |
Ref: It is a commonly held view that the phrase “may you live in interesting times” is an ancient Chinese curse. It is a phrase frequently wheeled out by the media or politicians when apparently significant but not particularly welcome events take place. A modest amount of research reveals that the phrase was first brought to public attention by Robert F Kennedy in a 1966 speech in Cape Town. It has also been traced even further back to a story in Astounding Science Fiction Magazine in 1950. Somewhat surprisingly, one place to which the phrase has not been traced is China, ancient or modern. Indeed, as it says on the BBC h2g2 website with gentle irony, “most Chinese scholars will not recognise the 'curse' as Chinese, because if it is of Chinese origin, it has somehow escaped mention in all of the ancient Chinese literature”. |

Ref: TOUGH REVIEW: BBC-backed 'encyclopaedia' website h2g2 has the following unflattering descriptions of Hamilton: 'Hamilton can be a dangerous town or a quiet one, depending on the places you frequent. Boy racers are a constant problem and there are areas where it would not be wise to leave your pit-bull unattended. The drug culture is rife. Party pills are popular. They claim to contain only herbal ingredients and are legal, but they are definitely not Vitamin C and it would be wise to stay away from them as you would any other drug.'
